Shannon Booth e154a7e0aa tests: switch from google test entirely to patch test 
We now have good enough support to make this move and _finally_ get rid
of the google test dependency!

Shannon Booth f29085cc5f patch: use a file class wrapper instead of fstreams 
There were some problems using fstreams on mingw due to wide strings.
The MSVC compiler as a non standard extension allows fstream to take a
fstream. But the mingw toolchain does not have the same functionality.

Create a File class wrapper around C FILE* to fix this problem.
